John Burnet of Barns

Follow a reader’s reconstruction of the Scottish journeys in Buchan’s historical novel, from Tweeddale to Glasgow and the hills of the fugitives. Pick a stage to see its places, connections and reading notes.

A literary sketch: John Burnet is the novel’s narrator. These are interpreted waypoints joined by straight lines, not a documented historical itinerary or a walking route. Place identifications, distances, bearings and ascent estimates are retained from the original sketch and are unverified.

Read the novel and understand the map

John Burnet of Barns: A Romance was first published in 1898; its opening scene is set in June 1678. This map concerns its Scottish passages, not the complete journey through the Low Countries.

Begin with the adventure in the wood of Dawyck, the journey to college, or the Cor Water cave. The source text is evidence for the story; it does not validate the sketch’s precise coordinates.

The grid conversion uses the British National Grid’s Airy 1830 ellipsoid and an approximate OSGB36-to-WGS84 transformation, adapted from Chris Veness’s geodesy reference. It is not a survey transformation.
